Side-by-Side Leadership (How you’re probably already leading)
Leadership has long been defined as being out in front. The cultural norm has leaders setting direction, making decisions, and directing their followers. But what if the most transformative leadership doesn’t happen in front, but beside?
I’ve come to call this Side-by-Side Leadership. It’s the kind of leadership that shows up over coffee, during the monotony of a work project, in text messages, and in the simple moments of daily life.
It doesn’t require a title or a platform. It asks only this: Notice who you are side-by-side with, and choose to make space and be curious.
Side-by-side leaders are intentional about the way they are present with others. Often this looks like listening, asking open-ended questions and speaking encouragement. They create space where people feel seen, safe, and strong.
It turns out, that most humans already have everything they need within them, but what they’re lacking is a leader who will witness, confirm and encourage. I believe this type of leadership is deeply needed by every single person.
The beauty of Side-by-Side Leadership is it goes both ways. It assumes that every human has something to glean from every other human. It brings our shoulders to touch and makes leadership a two-way relationship.
Side-by-Side Leadership isn’t about one person have more wisdom, more strength or more power than the other. It is a posture of being on the journey of life together.
It’s when someone notices your strengths and puts language to your potential. It’s when someone speaks courage into your tired heart. It’s when someone shows up not with a plan to fix things but with the grace to be with you on the journey. It’s when someone makes space for grief and loss, and sits with you with silent care.
You’re probably already leading this way but just didn’t know it!
Can I commission you to embrace your Side-by-Side Leadership work?
Tell yourself: I am already a leader. My presence brings something valuable. I will intentionally walk alongside others, speak courage, and call out what is good.
The world doesn’t just need more leaders in front, it needs more leaders side-by-side.
With you in the journey,
Justine
Reflection:
Where are you already walking alongside someone? What’s one small, intentional way you can keep showing up?
